Career gaps and DHA nurse licensing
A break in practice does not end a DHA application, but it changes it. The confusion is that there is no single threshold — there are several, and they do very different things.

Why the advice you have read disagrees with itself
Search for this and you will be told the limit is two years, or three, or five. All three numbers appear in DHA’s own material — and they are not competing accounts of one rule. They are separate thresholds that do separate jobs, and treating them as interchangeable is why so much of the advice is wrong.
Below is what each one actually is. Which applies to you depends on the length of your break and on your nationality.
The thresholds, and what each one means
Over two years — the definition
DHA’s licensing manual defines discontinuity in practice as an interruption of clinical practice exceeding two years. This is the definition of the term and nothing more. Crossing it does not require anything of you: it is not the point at which remediation starts, and it is not a cap. What it does mean is that you should expect to account for the period.
Over three years — remediation begins
Above three years, CME/CPD credits and clinical training in an approved practice setting are required before licensure, followed by the Authority’s licensure examination. The published nursing band starts at 40 CME/CPD credits and six months of training for a gap of three to under four years, and rises from there. Budget the time before the fees — six months of supervised training is a bigger commitment than the paperwork around it.
Over five years — the practical limit
In general, non-UAE nationals cannot apply for a licence with a gap of practice exceeding five years. For UAE nationals and Children of Emirati Women the equivalent limit is ten years. The wording is “in general”, so the Authority retains discretion — which means this is a conversation to have with DHA rather than a door to assume is shut, but it is not something to spend verification fees against on optimism.
Documented exceptions
UAE mandatory National Service
Time spent in UAE mandatory National Service is not counted as a gap of practice at all, for those it applies to.
UAE nationals and Children of Emirati Women
Treated differently both on the outer limit and on the examination requirement.
If you have not practised at all since qualifying, your situation is not obviously the one the gap rule describes — it addresses a gap between periods of practice. We will not guess at how it is applied to a nurse with no post-qualification practice, and neither should anybody else. DHA’s free self-assessment evaluates practice gaps directly, and that is where the question belongs.
Work out your gap precisely
Know the month you last practised, not just the year. A twelve-month uncertainty is enough to sit on both sides of a threshold, and the difference between one side and the other can be six months of supervised training or an application that cannot proceed.
The gap is measured at the point of assessment rather than when you started preparing, so it keeps growing while you gather documents. If you are close to a threshold, that matters: time spent assembling paperwork is time added to the break.

If your gap is over three years
Plan the training first
Clinical training has to be carried out in a practice setting approved and recognised by the Authority. Finding one, and securing a place, is the part with a lead time.
Then the examination
The Authority’s licensure examination follows the training rather than replacing it.

Common questions
What is the maximum career gap for a DHA nursing licence?
In general, non-UAE nationals cannot apply with a gap of practice exceeding five years; for UAE nationals and Children of Emirati Women the limit is ten. The wording leaves the Authority discretion, so an unusual case is worth raising with DHA directly rather than abandoning.
Is a two-year gap a problem for DHA?
Two years is where DHA’s definition of discontinuity in practice begins, but crossing it does not on its own require anything of you. Training and CPD obligations begin above three years, not at two.
What does DHA require after a gap of three to four years?
The published nursing band for that range is 40 CME/CPD credits together with six months of clinical training in an approved setting, followed by the Authority’s licensure examination. Longer gaps carry higher requirements.
Does maternity leave count as a gap in practice?
The published rules define the gap by interruption of clinical practice rather than by the reason for it, and the only exception documented for time not counted is UAE mandatory National Service. Because individual circumstances are exactly what the Authority’s self-assessment exists to evaluate, take a specific case to DHA rather than to a forum.
Does a nursing job outside clinical practice keep my continuity?
DHA defines experience as hands-on clinical experience during salaried employment while licensed. Roles without a hands-on clinical component are not what that describes, so do not assume they preserve continuity. Where a role is genuinely borderline, get it confirmed rather than discovering the answer at assessment.
